PlayStation 3
Released in 2010 by Sony Computer Entertainment
Grade: A
By not changing much from its predecessor, The Show 10 hits another home run. Its smooth, realistic gameplay is challenging for the right reasons.
Where it falls in the series
This is the fourth of ten Show games on PS3. The first PS4 version is The Show 14. You can read my review of MLB 09: The Show for a longer review, because this game is the same in all the ways that matter to me.
Praises and gripes
The action is ultra smooth and realistic. The controls are simple while allowing you to do anything you’d want to do on the baseball diamond. The timing-based pitching meter works great, hitting is intuitive with a perfect catcher’s eye view, fielding is natural, baserunning is straightforward, and all the managing decisions are easy to navigate.
The great thing about The Show is that the pitching-hitting logic seems well fleshed out. You need to use smart, realistic pitching tactics. CPU opponents will catch on if you you use the same patterns over and over. When you’re batting, you need to be disciplined, because the opponent will exploit your tendencies.
Like real baseball, the more you put into this game, the more you’ll get out of it. Playing through a whole baseball season seems almost insane, but with The Show, you just might want to do it. Improving your skills over time can be quite satisfying, and the game provides sliders for adjusting the difficulty of many aspects of the game.
You can’t really go wrong with The Show.
